There are wedding days that you witness as a photographer, and then there are wedding days where you get to be in the story, and for me, Bre & Jared’s was both. I had the absolute honor of standing beside Bre as a bridesmaid while also capturing her day with my camera. It was beautiful, chaotic, full of laughter, emotion, a few timeline curveballs (because what's a wedding without some sort of drama), and so much love. This one will stick with me forever.
The morning kicked off at top speed, driving out to the venue and all the getting ready moments, mine included. Between getting my own hair done and doing my makeup, making sure that I ate something every 30 minutes - try doing this six months pregnant, eating is mandatory - and grabbing detail shots for Bre, the day was full and the timeline was packed. This is definitely proof of being able to multi-task, if anyone wants it. Being both a bridesmaid and a photographer is a lot, but I honestly loved it.
Every wedding has its curveball, whether you can prepare for it or not, and we had two. Bre had a sprained ankle that we had to keep taped & adjust our posing accordingly, and one we couldn't prepare for came early on in the timeline. A groomsmen... issue... meant we had to re-write the timeline on the fly. Instead of doing the groomsmen getting ready photos like we planned while the bridesmaids ate lunch, the bridesmaids all suddenly had to be ready to go. I borrowed my husband who I often use as a second shooter and took him out to take the photos I needed to be in. Because he was a groomsman in this wedding, that part was entirely unplanned (I'd hired an additional shooter to cover these photos, the full bridal party, and the ceremony), but we made it work. Honestly, I love his photos more than some of mine that I took, thus the reason for him being my go-to second shooter for most weddings.
Once everyone was accounted for, we got the guys ready and out for photos, they were looking sharp and laughing their way through it. We did a first touch between Bre & Jared, where they stood on each side of a corner, hands clasped, and took a deep breath & prayed together before the ceremony. A father & brother first look with Bre, a mother-son look between Jared & his mom, and because we had extra time, we filled it with the solo portraits of Bre & Jared separately to give us more time after the ceremony.
My actual second shooters arrived just in time for the ceremony, I jumped back into the role of bridesmaid for the processional, grabbed my camera to make sure I captured the first kiss & aisle kiss, and Bre & Jared promised forever in front of their people. Afterward, we knocked out family photos, huge shoutout to the my second shooter who helped everyone move quickly, and full bridal party portraits. The clouds came over providing perfectly diffused light for the couple's portraits.
The reception was all kinds of special, priceless first dances, speeches & toasts, a fantastic taco bar dinner, the BEST gluten-free cake I've ever had, and so much laughter.
Once the lights dropped low and the dance floor opened, we switched to flash photography to capture all the vibes and fun moments. Jared & Bre are very into swing dancing - Jared is one of the best leads that I know, and that made for some absolutely epic photos. I had to set my camera down for a couple of dances & songs myself. As usual, I also managed to get some photos in while dancing at the same time. It's the multi-tasking thing showing up again. And of course, the day wouldn't be complete without a sparkler exit.
Being both behind the camera and in front of it on Bre & Jared’s day was amazing and wonderful. I wouldn’t have traded the experience for anything.
To Bre & Jared — thank you for trusting me to capture your day while also having me stand up beside you. It is a treasured memory I will never forget.
